Zanele and Ntombo turn up the heat in the Velaphi Kitchen
The Gauteng Department for Sport and Recreation recently discovered there is more to being Paralympic athletes when it comes to Ntombo Somtswayi (swimming) and Zanele Situ (discus, shot-put and javelin). When they are not training or competing, Somtswayi and Situ are involved with the Velaphi Project formed 18 months ago to provide job opportunities for the disabled. They run a catering business, which provide the meals during the recent Masakhane Games for which the Sport and Recreation Department gave an order.
There is always something cooking at Velaphi Projects and with SA Paralympic stars Zanele Situ and Ntombo Somtswayi more than at home in the kitchen, the catering orders keep on rolling in as the smell of delicious cuisine fills the air of the BEE company's offices in Ekurhuleni.
Spare a thought for Velaphi Banqueting chef Johannes Mmotlana who has his hands full in ensuring the sports stars stick to the tried-and-tested recipes as orders for the opening of Woolworths' new Clear Water store and catering for the Gauteng leg of the Masekhane Games, turn from recipe book material into a feast fit for royalty.
Accommodation a plenty is available through Velphi Projects, whose on-site guesthouse caters for 40 persons, with further rooms for up to an additional 260 persons being available through the company's working association with local establishments.
Velaphi Projects director David Shabangu said that the company was recently the accommodation source for the Ghana women's football side that competed in the Woman's CAF Cup held in Gauteng, while the Ghanaian deaf soccer side also made use of the accommodation facilities during their stay in the Rainbow Nation. Our catering facilities are perfectly situated for weddings, launches or training camps, said Shabangu.
Managing Director Graham Hall said that plans are afoot for a number of other venues to be added to the Velaphi portfolio both from a catering and accommodation perspective, with Velaphi's business passion set to hit the national route, in areas such as Bloemfontein and George, in particular.
