The beautiful town of Hermanus is proud to host the first ever Wheels and Runners Relay Race, sponsored by Checkers. “This race is aimed at giving the average person in a wheelchair the opportunity to compete. And the relay race format is a first in South Africa where people with disabilities can compete against their peers in a team event together with able-bodied runners,” says event publicist Karen Coetzee.
It will become known as the race with the most beautiful view. The start and finish line will be at the Old Harbour in Hermanus, and the circular route will run along the seafront in Marine drive and Westcliff drive. Winners and their teams will walk away with fantastic prizes to the value of R38 850.00, and all entrants will receive gift packs.
First Event: Relay Race - The relay race will consist of 5 legs and each team will be made up of the following athletes/participants: FIRST LEG : (1,3 km) Upper Limbs - Entries with a disability of the upper limbs, for example Quadriplegics and Multiple Sclerosis, MND, Upper limb amputee’s etc. SECOND LEG: (2,3 km)
Junior runners - Able-bodied runners under 16 years. THIRD LEG: (2,3 km) Motorised chairs - All power wheelchairs, shop riders, power buggies etc. FOURTH LEG: (5 km) Senior runners - Able-bodied runners: One-person 16 to 39 years plus one person 40 years and older. FIFTH LEG: (5 km) Lower Limbs - Entries with a disability of the lower limbs only, for example Paraplegics, Lower Amputees and Spina Bifida etc. No racing chairs.
Second Event: Hand Cycle race (20 km).
If there is sufficient interest from racing wheelchair entrants, they could be included in this race.
Third Event: Fun Walk (2,3 km) “Push anything with wheels”.
