The Gauteng Handcycle Racing Club is always looking for new members, In addition, the club is organising a new handcycle Tour for next year which should be a lot of fun.
The Toer de Kaap 2008, a handcycling tour in the South Western Cape, is a 5-day, 427km circular route that starts on Sunday 17th February 2008 in George. Many handcyclists and racing wheelchair athletes will be in George for the Outeniqua Charity Challenge during early February. So stick around a bit longer for the Toer de Kaap!
This is a tour and not a race, so there is no 'official' start or finish time. Times are not recorded and there is no prize for coming in first. It is essentially a tour designed to give you the opportunity to put in some serious training for the Argus Cycle Tour in March 2008.
The Tour de Kaap leaves George, passes through Mossel Bay along the coast down the N2, then heads inland over the dreaded Garcia Pass towards Ladismith through some dramatic karoo scenery. Then to Oudtshoorn via the Huisrivier Pass and finally down the Outeniqua Pass back to George.
The tour is self-catering - accommodation is arranged, with transportation provided for luggage so that you can cycle without the burden of carrying all your own kit. The vehicle will depart for the overnight stop at 9 a.m. every morning. There will also be a sweep vehicle available in case any cyclists are unable to complete a leg for any reason. All cyclists must carry a cellphone to call the support vehicle if necessary.
