The Orange River Challenge

During December 2005 a group of blind and paraplegic adventurers took on the mighty Orange River. The purpose of this Challenge is to create a two-way awareness, awareness within the disability world and awareness to the outside world.

Twenty brave people embarked on this five-day journey, eight disabled: five blind three paraplegics and a strong support crew of 12 members. They covered approximately 90kms of surging Orange River rapids.

The driving force behind the Orange River Challenge, Mandy Rapson, has a degree in Sports Science at Stellenbosch as well as a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. She has been a guide on the Orange River plus a few other rivers and undertook the challenge to help disabled people realise that they can overcome obstacles that seem insurmountable.
