New Hope School for learners with Cerebral Palsy and Specific Learning Disabilities in Pretoria held their first annual “ROLJOL” on 28 February 2009.
This fun walk for wheelchair users aimed to build bonds between learners, parents, staff and the community. It took place on the grounds of Hatfield Christian Church / School and learners from both Hatfield Christian School and New Hope assisted the teams during the day.
The event was initiated by the Physiotherapy Department of New Hope School and co-ordinated by Daleen Maré.
Teams, dressed up for the occasion, had great fun while completing the course. Although the steep uphill left the parents and other pushers out of breath, the learners in the wheelchairs were all smiles!
Although it was not the primary goal of the event, funds were also raised which will be used to the benefit of learners with physical disabilities.
Sponsors from the business community kindly donated prizes, sun visors and water bottles. We would like to thank Standard Bank, Rolling Inspiration, Prinsloo Orthopedic Services and Quad Association for their contributions. Businesses who would like to contribute next year would be greatly appreciated.
Later this year, in August, Bern Goosen, a motivational speaker with Cerebral Palsy, will be presenting a talk at New Hope School which is sure to inspire parents and learners alike. Bern was also a participant at the ROLJOL.
Then, in October, a psychologist will be presenting a workshop for parents which will address the process of coming to terms with physical challenges in the family.
