The 3rd Annual Round Table Cannonball Run Africa 2005, proudly sponsored by Bosal, kicked off on 5 August 2005 at Investment Cars in Bryanston as Lamborghinis, VW Beetles, Ferraris and many other vehicles lined up for the start.
The three-day and three-night charity event, organised and managed by the volunteer members of Round Table, started with a drivers briefing and decaling of the Cannonballers vehicles.
The Round Table had a number of challenges in keeping this charity event within the spirit and excitement of the original concept, while abiding by the rules and regulations of the road. This was achieved by the use of various cryptic clues, adventure tasks and motorsport events.
Saturday, 6 August 2005, saw the start of the Cannonball Run proper which took contestants from the Wesbank Raceway and Kyalami Racetrack to the sleepy towns of Belfast, Dullstroom and Lydenburg, ending the day at Greenway Woods Resort in Whiteriver.
Day two saw the Cannonballers make their way via Sabie to Lone Creek Falls. After some hectic clue finding at the Motor Museum in Sabie, it was off to Induna Adventures on the R536 where one team member had to jump onto quad bikes and ride into the bushes to locate their next clue book. Then it was on to Nelspruit for the Bosal Gymkhana at a tight and technical circuit built in the Pick ‘n Pay car park at the Riverside Mall.
Day three kicked off with the start of the Subaru Hill Climb. A crowd packed Pilgrims Rest was treated to the spectacle as each Cannonballer had to run around Pilgrims Rest finding clues that would lead them to their next destination.
From there it was back to Induna Adventures, this time to reach speeds in excess of 100km/h on the Zip Line. The staff at Induna Adventures professionally ensuring that the harnesses were correctly fitted.
The event culminated in a beautiful Black Tie banquet. It was the second time entry of the Blues Bru’s, Iain Goodway and Brett Holmes, in their blue MG who took overall honours, while the 4x4 entered Game Hunters, Rigby Croxford and Peter Corlett won the Round Table Cannonball Run Spirit award, sponsored by Bosal.
In all the Cannonball Run 2005 proved an absolutely wonderful charity event, which made way for a substantial donation to Little Eden. Moreover, Subaru South Africa donated a vehicle to the QuadPara Association of South Africa’s driver training programme.
The Round Table, Bosal and associated sponsors would like to thank all of the competing Cannonballers and we look forward to seeing you again next year.
