Ms Lulu Xingwana was recently appointed by President Jacob Zuma as the new Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities.
Ms Xingwana swapped allegiance from the UDF to the ANC in 1991, joining the ANC Women’s League in 1993. She has a long history in the struggle for women’s rights serving since 2002 as the Chairperson - SADC: Regional Women’s Caucus and is a strong believer in education.
At an art exhibition funded by her previous department, Arts and Culture, Xingwana took offence to a series of photographs - portraying nude black women embracing each other - taken by lesbian activist, Zanele Muholi. After declaring the display “pornographic” she made a quick departure leaving her PA to read out her speech. We can only hope that she will be as passionate about disability!
